Rep. Fred Upton announces retirement
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Former U.S. representative Fred Upton has been chosen to be the main speaker at the University of Michigan’s 2025 Winter Commencement.
Upton served in the House of Representatives for more than 35 years, serving the people of Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Holland. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Over his 18 terms, he served on and eventually chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee, overseeing significant legislation like the 21st Century Cures Act, which provided crucial funding for health research and streamlined drug approvals, and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which aimed to enhance energy efficiency standards.
