The new way Eastern Market is keeping Flower Day blooming

A Detroit tradition is back, virtually

It is that time of year! Flower Day is a beloved Detroit tradition that happens annually at Eastern Market. Normally it’s a big a party where music is played and vendors gather to help people find the perfect flowers for their gardens. This year organizers had to switch things up because of safety concerns.

Dan Carmody, President of the Eastern Market Partnership, joined Tati Amare to explain how people can enjoy the upcoming flower sales safely from their homes. Carmody said it might not the be party that Detroiters are accustomed to, but people can still expect beautiful flowers.

“It’s really not Flower Day this year, but Flower Season. Just because we can’t have the traditional party atmosphere, we can still have flowers,” said Carmody.

Here’s how it works: Starting this Sunday at noon, Eastern Market will host a livestream show on their Facebook page and people can pre-order flowers on line, and pick up orders from the vendors the following Thursday. This will happen starting at noon for the next three Sundays, (May 24, May 31 and June 7). They will also spotlight their flower growers, what they have to offer and have expert tips for your garden. Flowers will also be available during the Saturday markets and when they begin the Sunday markets in June, but those will not have the broad selection available during the live stream shows.
