MDOT says entire bridge over both sides of I-94 must be removed

DETROIT – All lanes of I-94 at Harper Avenue reopened Friday just before 5 p.m. The highway was initially closed after a pedestrian bridge collapsed.

The Townsend Street pedestrian bridge over westbound I-94 collapsed onto the freeway Friday morning.

The pedestrian bridge is a couple blocks west of Van Dyke.

  • UPDATE: Both directions of I-94 are now closed at I-75 in Detroit.

A truck that was too tall to be driven under the bridge struck the bridge.

Michigan State Police said no one was injured.

MDOT: Full bridge must come down

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) said it determined the entire bridge will need to be removed. Both directions of I-94 are now shut down for bridge demolition, according to (MDOT).

MDOT said the timeline for crews to be finished with demolishing the bridge is to be determined.
