House explosion injures two in Commerce Township

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A house explosion in Commerce Township injured two people early Thursday morning.

The home, located in the area of Commerce and Newton roads, exploded around 12:30 a.m.

“When our guys got here, they had a pretty big fire. We sent the entire fire department here to put the fire out,” said Commerce Township Fire Chief Jim Dundas. “We had two victims taken to local hospitals.”

It’s not known what caused the explosion, although Consumers Energy had technicians at the scene. However, fire investigators butane canisters that are often used in drug manufacturing could be involved.

The house is a total loss. The back of the house was completely leveled by the explosion.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office also had a fire investigator at the scene working to determine the cause.
