DETROIT – One person was killed on the Lodge Freeway when a wrong-way driver struck their SUV and caused it to become engulfed in flames.

The crash happened at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, in the southbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Grand River Avenue in Detroit.

Officials said a Jeep was heading north in the southbound lanes when it crashed into another SUV, which caught fire.

Michigan State Police troopers said they tried to get into the SUV, but they couldn’t because it was engulfed in flames

They were able to remove the 27-year-old woman from the driver’s seat of the Jeep. She was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Detroit firefighters arrived and put out the fire, but the driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in either car.

It’s unclear why the driver of the Jeep was heading the wrong way on the freeway.

“The crash reconstructionist is on scene investigating the crash,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “We are attempting to determine where the wrong-way driver entered the roadway and where she was coming from.”

State troopers continue to investigate.
