‘He was a pillar to the community’: New school in Melvindale to honor fallen officer

Ceremony was held on officers 27th birthday

MELVINDALE, Mich. – A new school in Melvindale will be named after a fallen police officer.

The new fourth and fifth-grade school building will be named after Cpl. Mohamed Said.

Said was shot and killed in the line of duty last July.

A ceremony was held Wednesday to honor Said on what would have been his 27th birthday.

“Today was more of a subtle moment where people could sit and understand how we feel about Cpl Said,” Cpl Mohamed Hacham said. “Not only him being my partner but he was just a pillar to the community.”

Fellow officers and community leaders including the mayor spoke during the ceremony, recognizing his contributions.

“He was just there for everybody,” Hacham said. “Whether you were big or small, old or young, he was there for you.”

Said leaves behind a young son who was in attendance at Wednesday’s ceremony.
