A couple from Ann Arbor, Michigan, paid for everyone’s meal at a crowded restaurant in Windsor, citing their love of Canada and apologizing for the rift between the two countries, according to a report from CBC News.

The kind gesture happened at Toast on Erie Street over the weekend.

May Hermiz, the co-owner of the restaurant, told CBC News that she was shocked when the couple told her they had wanted to pay for everyone in the restaurant during the lunch rush.

“I was kind of stunned because nobody has ever done that in our nine years of being in business, nobody has ever paid for the whole restaurant,” Hermiz told CBC News.

Employees announced the news, which prompted cheers from the diners and the woman stood up to speak to the restaurant.

According to CBC News, Hermiz said the woman told patrons “she hates what the United States is doing to us and she doesn’t support it. And she’s so happy we won the hockey game and it’s a little token of appreciation for Canadians and how much she loves us and how much she loves supporting local.”

Everyone cheered again after hearing this.

This comes as Trump plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting next Tuesday.

“We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social on Thursday. “China will likewise be charged an additional 10% Tariff on that date.”

Several restaurant-goers went up to the couple to thank them as they were leaving and one woman who was with her godchildren told CBC News that she thought it was necessary to give them some money to put toward the tip.

“They said ‘no, that’s the least we could do,’” the woman told CBC News. “They said … they weren’t going to stop supporting Canada and loving Canada, and they felt bad for the rift that it was causing, so it was just very generous."
