DETROIT – Friends, family members, and political leaders gathered on a rainy day to celebrate the life and legacy of former U.S. Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who left an indelible mark on Detroit through her decades of public service.
During her tenure in Congress, Cheeks Kilpatrick secured over $2 billion in federal funding dedicated to revitalizing Detroit.
Her efforts transformed the city’s landscape, particularly evident in downtown development projects.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan emphasized her lasting contributions to the city’s infrastructure.
“If a measure of a person’s life is if their accomplishments outlive them, all you have to do is go downtown to see the thousands of people who have better bus service, to see the beautiful riverfront,” Duggan said, highlighting the visible results of her work.
Beyond the physical improvements to Detroit, Cheeks Kilpatrick’s legacy includes breaking barriers for women, particularly women of color, in politics.
The memorial service featured tributes from family members, including her son, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who praised his mother’s dedication to both her family and public service.
“You were the best mom ever,” he said, noting how she successfully raised two children while pursuing her career in public service.
Cheeks Kilpatrick, who passed away at age 80, leaves behind a legacy of public service, infrastructure development, and inspiration for future generations of leaders.
