As temperatures drop and winter sets in, thousands of Detroit families face the challenge of keeping their children warm. To help meet that need, 97.9 WJLB’s annual “Coats For Kids” event returns Sunday, November 16th, at Eastern Market, Shed 5.

Detroit remains one of the most economically challenged major cities in the country, and winter places additional stress on vulnerable families. More than half of children in the city, 51%, are living below the poverty line, according to recent Census Bureau data.

With Michigan’s long winters, children without appropriate winter gear are at higher risk for frostbite, hypothermia, and other cold-related health issues. For many families, a warm coat is more than a piece of clothing, it’s protection, dignity, and security during some of the harshest months of the year.

This event at eastern market is a chance to ease one serious winter burden for families in need, and to make sure Detroit’s children head into the cold months with a practical resource and a symbol of community care. The only requirement is that you bring your child with you to receive a free coat.
