Stretch of Telegraph to close near I-75 due to sinkhole -- what drivers need to know

Closure to begin at 5 p.m. on Oct. 2

TAYLOR, Mich. – A stretch of Telegraph Road near I-75 in Taylor is expected to close Friday evening due to a sinkhole.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the northbound I-75 connector ramp to northbound Telegraph, and Telegraph from Pennsylvania to Eureka, is expected to close at 5 p.m. Oct. 2 because of a sinkhole.

Where is the sinkhole, and how did it form?

MDOT spokesperson Diana Cross said the sinkhole is beneath the roadway’s pavement and cannot be seen from above.

Cross said the cause of the rupture is unclear, but it likely resulted from a large drainage pipe under the road shifting and leaving a void. She also noted that the pipe stretches across all four lanes of northbound Telegraph.

“We’re working on getting devices to close northbound Telegraph at Pennsylvania,” Cross said. “Obviously, we don’t want any weight on the roadway.”

When will Telegraph near I-75 reopen?

Cross said crews don’t know how long the repairs could take. It’s also unclear what needs to be done to repair the sinkhole or how long Telegraph would stay closed.
