Michigan COVID data for long term care as of Nov. 2, 2020. (WDIV)

Here we are tracking the state of Michigan’s COVID-19 data for nursing homes, also referred to as long term care facilities.

The information below represents COVID-19 data reported directly to MDHHS by licensed and operating Skilled Nursing, Home for the Aged and Adult Foster Care facilities (licensed to serve 13 or more individuals) in Michigan from January 1, 2020 through March 2, 2021.

All long-term care facilities additionally have an obligation to report COVID-positive residents and/or staff to their Local Health Department. Ensuring accurate and timely reporting by those facilities subject to MDHHS reporting requirements is a priority for the State of Michigan. The data is leveraged to guide state efforts and ensure sufficient support is provided where it is needed most, as well as to allow transparency for residents and families.

MDHHS employs ongoing data validation processes and works with the Institute for Health Policy at MSU to support additional validation exercises on the data. When a facility is flagged for a validation concern, the department may work with the Regional Health Care Coalition, conduct direct outreach, and provide technical assistance to the facility. Facilities are provided the opportunity to correct entry errors identified during the validation process. All data presented is considered provisional and may change as facilities correct or add data.(To view a county-by-county facility breakdown, click here)

Data is updated on Monday.

Skilled Nursing Facilities are facilities licensed to provide organized nursing care and medical treatment to 7 or more unrelated individuals suffering or recovering from illness, injury, or infirmity. This data set includes all licensed nursing facilities with the exception of hospice residences licensed as nursing homes.

Adult Foster Care Facilities and Homes for the Aged provide care to persons not needing the 24 hour nursing care found in nursing facilities, yet need monitoring and assistance with activities of daily living.

  • Adult Foster Care (AFC) homes are residential settings that provide 24-hour personal care, protection, and supervision for individuals who are developmentally disabled, mentally ill, physically handicapped or aged who cannot live alone but who do not need continuous nursing care. This data set includes all AFCs licensed to care for 13 or more individuals.
  • A Home for the Aged (HFA) provides 24 hour room, board, and supervised personal care to unrelated individuals 55 years of age or older. This data set includes all licensed HFAs.

Note: Some facilities have dedicated space to appropriately isolate and care for residents with COVID-19 and they may also be accepting individuals with COVID-19 that require nursing facility type care from the hospital. Additionally, some facilities are actively performing regular testing on all staff and residents, so counts may fluctuate as pending results become available.
