Ann Arbor startup helps Jet’s Pizza launch text-to-order technology
ANN ARBOR – Jet’s Pizza is hoping to disrupt the industry with its new text-to-order technology. The pizza company has partnered with Ann Arbor-based startup Ordr AI to make text orders for customers a reality. More than 75% of stores are currently operating the technology and more than 1 million text orders have been placed since its launch. Jet’s Pizza is now offering 20% off pizzas to customers to text in their orders. “We teamed up, we hustled, we innovated, and we made something great,” John Jetts, President of Jet’s Pizza said in a statement.

Ann Arbor’s Blank Slate Creamery open for season

Sixth-grader from Ann Arbor stars in Food Network’s ‘Kids Baking Championship’
ANN ARBOR – For local student Nemo Tsai, 2020 was as normal a year as could be until a casting agent from Food Network reached out to him on Instagram to audition for Season 9 of “Kids Baking Championship.”Nemo’s family has owned Japanese-American fusion restaurant Godaiko and Tsai Grocery in southwest Ann Arbor for more than 25 years. Raised in the kitchen, Nemo was making sushi rolls before he was five years old, and recently took up baking after watching videos on YouTube. “This was the first season that parents get onto the show and react,” said Nemo. Aside from the title of Kids Baking Champion, the winner of the Kids Baking Championship will take home a grand prize of $25,000 and will get a spot in Food Network Magazine.

Detroit’s Bon Bon Bon opens new Ann Arbor location

Knight’s Steakhouse in Ann Arbor temporarily closes over positive COVID-19 cases
ANN ARBOR – Update: Knight’s Steakhouse reopened on Oct. 29 with limited hours and staff. Knight’s Steakhouse has temporarily closed both of its locations after several employees tested positive for COVID-19. The news comes after Michigan marked its highest one-day increase of 3,338 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Gretchen Whitmer said the sharp increase of cases might mean Michigan has to “take steps backward” to curb the spread. Management announced they are working with the Washtenaw County Health Department to determine when it will be safe to reopen.

Cannoli consumption is up as Ann Arbor-based BLISS takes off
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Ann Arbor native Elizabeth Sinawe is using her mothers recipe to help Tree Town increase its cannoli consumption. Cannolis are my favorite dessert, Sinawe said stating that the BLISS business name came from the state of bliss and happiness she experiences when she has her mothers homemade cannolis. While there are some traditional flavors, Sinawe experiments with flavors based on desserts that she likes. Sinawe said that the BLISS cannoli recipe, her mothers, was used to make cannolis in the Ann Arbor Italian restaurant her parents owned around 20 years ago. Instead, Sinawe has two pick-up locations: Ann Arbor and West Bloomfield; however, she has delivered to other areas, like Detroit, Royal Oak, Dearborn, Ypsilanti and Canton.

Ann Arbor cheesecakerie expanding footprint to Metro Detroit

Bao Boys food truck opens in Ann Arbor, brings LA inspired flavors
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Bringing Los Angeles-inspired flavors to Ann Arbor, LA natives Steven Choi and Brian Kim opened up the Bao Boys food truck in the yard of York on July 1. Choi and Kim dont have backgrounds in the food industry but they both love food, Bao Boys co-owner Steven Choi said. The current bao menu at Bao Boys was an amalgamation of different flavors inspired by different cuisines the friends experienced in LA. Choi said that eaters should check for updated hours and times on the Bao Boys Instagram account where the food truck will make announcements. The food truck naturally acts as a barrier to separate the food-truck owners from their customers and that customers cant come in the food truck.

Refraction AI launches contactless robot grocery delivery in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Refraction AI has partnered with the Produce Station in Ann Arbor to offer contactless grocery delivery with its autonomous robot. The REV-1 robot, which hit the streets of Ann Arbor in December 2019, has been delivering meals from partnering restaurants. Our expansion into grocery delivery was a no-brainer during this time when the need for contactless delivery is so strong, said Matthew Johnson-Roberson, co-founder and CEO of Refraction AI in a statement. According to the robotics startup, the REV-1 delivery robot is able to hold about six paper bags of groceries at a time. Logan Restaurant announces closure after 16 years in downtown Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR One of downtowns longest-running establishments, Logan Restaurant, announced that it will be closing its doors permanently after 16 years. The restaurant, owned by brothers Ryan and Thad Gillies, made the announcement on its Facebook page on Monday afternoon. We are sad to announce Logan restaurant will be closing its doors, read the post. In order to move inventory, Logan is transforming into a retail wine store for customers, with discounts for cases and half cases. The Gillies brothers opened fast casual concept Chow Asian Street Food a couple blocks from Logan in 2019.

Owner of Ann Arbors Afternoon Delight reflects on 42 years in business as he retires
ANN ARBOR Tom Hackett wasnt planning on getting out of the business he opened in 1978 -- until COVID-19 arrived in Michigan. For decades, people have been lining up down the street to get a taste of the delicious brunch fare and experience the cozy, family style environment Hackett worked hard to establish. My daughter was raised there and she worked as a waitress when she went to college. The way its going to happen is its going to take a long time to get back to normal. Afternoon Delight reopened on Tuesday for carry out, curbside, catering and delivery and Hackett said the adapted business is already going really well.

Arbor Brewing Company relocating original brewpub after 25 years downtown
ANN ARBOR Arbor Brewing Company announced on Tuesday it will be relocating its downtown brewpub to another location in Ann Arbor. The pub and eatery has been in its current location -- a historic building at 114 E Washington St. -- for 25 years. In a Facebook post, the owners reported increasing operating challenges in the downtown location even before the COVID-19 pandemic began. With the end of our lease in sight we have made the decision to move out of this location, wrote the owners. Ann Arbor is in our DNA and it is important to us to be here.
