Ann Arbor Fire Department saves 120-year-old downtown building
ANN ARBOR โ Quick response from the Ann Arbor Fire Department saved a downtown building on Tuesday, according to Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy. The 120-year-old building was built with balloon framing, which features multiple void spaces on the structureโs upper levels. According to Kennedy, these spaces allow fire to spread rapidly. โThere were a lot of void spaces and multiple roofs.โLocated just blocks from the Ann Arbor Fire Station, firefighters were able to aggressively respond to stop the fire from spreading. Located next to the Delonis Center, Washtenaw Countyโs homeless shelter, Ann Arbor Police believe that homeless individuals may have unintentionally started the blaze in the carport area.

Coronavirus order chaos in Michigan: Hereโs where things stand
Late Friday afternoon (Oct. 2), the Michigan Supreme Court delivered a bombshell ruling striking down Michigan Gov. On Sunday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced her office would no longer enforce the governorโs emergency orders. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued a new order restricting gathering sizes, requiring face coverings and limiting some businesses across the state. MDHHS Director Robert Gordon said this new order relies on authorities that were first enacted after the Spanish Flu of 1918, and that were not at issue in the Michigan Supreme Courtโs decision. For now, the MDHHS order is in effect across Michigan.
Michigan eases visitor restrictions on nursing homes, long-term care, juvenile facilities
DETROIT โ Michigan is easing restrictions on visiting nursing homes and other care facilities for limited circumstances as the coronavirus pandemic continues. The orders allow expanded visitation in long-term care facilities including nursing homes, and in facilities for youth who are in child caring institutions or juvenile justice facilities. One order applies to residential long-term care facilities, which include nursing homes, homes for the aged, adult foster care facilities, hospice facilities, substance abuse disorder residential facilities, independent living facilities and assisted living facilities. The other order affects youth in congregate care facilities โ known as child caring institutions โ and juvenile justice facilities โ also known as juvenile detention facilities. Safety requirements that facilities must follow to allow visitors can be found in the epidemic orders for residential long-term care facilities and for congregate care facilities.

Michigan governor extends restrictions on entering nursing homes
Gretchen Whitmer has extended an Executive Order that restricts visits to nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Executive Order 2020-136 extends existing safety measures to maintain restrictions regarding entry to care facilities designed to protect vulnerable populations. Whitmer also signed Executive Order 2020-135, which creates the bipartisan Michigan Nursing Homes COVID-19 Preparedness Task Force within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Michigan Nursing Homes COVID-19 Preparedness Task Force will be charged with, among other things, analyzing relevant data on the threat of COVID-19 in nursing homes, and making recommendations to the governor on improving data quality, and releasing periodic reports to the governor on its findings and recommendations. The task force must produce a recommendation to the governor for an action plan on how to prepare nursing homes for any future wave of COVID-19 cases by August 31, 2020.

Arizona reactivates hospital emergency plan as COVID-19 cases spike after reopening
PHOENIX โ For the second time, Arizona is activating its hospital emergency plan as cases of COVID-19 continue to increase in the state following implementation of their reopening plan. Doug Duceyโs stay-at-home order expired on May 15, COVID-19 cases have soared 110 percent - more than doubling to 27,678, as of Monday, according to NBC affiliate KPNX. The governor said last week that an increase in cases was due to an increase in testing. But ICU and ventilator use are rising in state hospitals. Worldwide, more than 400,000 have died from COVID-19, according to Johns Hopkins University, including 110,000 in the U.S.

Woman escapes Shelby Township house fire, son dies
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. โ A house caught on fire Saturday evening near Shelby Road and 25 Mile Road, officials report. Shelby Township Police and Fire responded to the house fire around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday. According to police, the 73-year-old woman homeowner woke up to her home on fire and attempted to help her 36-year-old son out of the home unsuccessfully. The woman was forced to leave the home and call 911 at her neighborโs home, police said. The home ownerโs son was later found dead in the home, officials said.
