Large parts of the Muslim world are preparing to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the start of the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, but the festivities are overshadowed in many parts of the region by conflict and tragedy.

This year’s holy month of Ramadan coincides with the longest drought on record in Somalia.

Imad Hamad is a longtime member of the Islamic Center of Detroit and a leader in Metro Detroit’s Muslim community. Hamad is trying to spread the message that during Ramadan the COVID-19 vaccine is OK to take. During Ramadan, Muslims have to fast all day and can only eat at sundown. But Muslim community leaders, like Imam’s and scholars, are saying the vaccine has no nutritional value. He’ll get his second dose during Ramadan and said that Muslims getting the shot during Ramadan won’t have to make up days.

According to Dingell, Ramadan will become the first Arab American to serve in the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. Ahmad will also be the first Arab American to serve in the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs and I have no doubt he will continue to build broad coalitions throughout our federal government.
