Since the onset of the pandemic, a number of Michigan gyms have struggled to reopen -- particularly due to drops in membership and, of course, the summerโs back-and-forth legal battle with the state. Leaders of the Michigan Fitness Club Association (MFCA) say fitness centers are in rough shape. Officials believe it is likely that one in five gyms across the state will have to close by 2022. โThereโs no reason to assume that brick and mortar will be supplanted by online fitness,โ Rief said.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Ann Arbor is the fourth most fitness-friendly city in the United States for 2021, according to an annual study by SmartAsset. Hereโs what the study said:With 67 fitness professionals per 10,000 workers, Tree Town had the second-highest rate of fitness professionals out of the metropolitan areas included in the study. The city had 112 fitness establishments per 10,000 establishments but only 7.4 percent of commuters walked or biked to work, ranking Ann Arbor 10th and 15th respectively. This is the second year that Ann Arbor has been in fourth place on the SmartAsset study, and its third time in the top ten. Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program in Detroit hopes new van will help them do more -- Asks for your vote
DETROIT โ The Downtown Boxing Gym does more than just teach kids how to box. Itโs a nonprofit that provides high-risk children structure, tutoring and some lessons in the boxing ring. Sweeney said they own one van and rely on leases and grants for the eight other vans they operate. If they got another van, they could bring even more kids into the program. The gym is hoping a new van will help them do even more.
Recreational sports facilities reopen Monday at University of Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ After closing recreational sports facilities for six months due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the University of Michigan reopened its facilities to patrons on Monday. The Central Campus Recreation Building, Intramural Sports Building and North Campus Recreation Building facilities started accepting reservations on Friday, Sept. 28. Modifications to the U-M facilities include:Cardio and strength equipment moved to be 10 feet apart; some can be found on gymnasium courts in CCRB, IMSB and NCRB. The university will evaluate when additional court activities and services will be allowed, according to the U-M facilities update. The reopening announcement comes at the same time the university is seeing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Doors to the Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center will reopen on Tuesday. Only members will be allowed to use the facility, according to a release by Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission. The weight room, cardio room, track and gymnasium will have individual capacity limits. The recreation center will have limited hours from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays for extra cleaning. Life Time kicking off New Year with free access to gyms, classes
DETROIT โ If your resolution is to get in shape, Life Time is making it a bit easier with Commitment Day celebrations. From Dec. 28 through Jan. 5, Life Time locations across the country will allow free access to the gyms, as well as a number of classes. Some events planned include 5K races on Jan. 1, a family workout day and an indoor triathlon. Registration is required for free entry to the gyms and events. Participating Metro Detroit locations:
