Construction to restart on I-75 in Oakland County this weekend: What to know

Closures begin Saturday morning

Ramp closures are expected this weekend on I-75 and I-696 as crews begin preliminary work ahead of a full-scale rebuild later this winter.

This work is affiliated with the ongoing I-75 modernization project in Oakland County. This year, crews will rebuild northbound I-75 pavement, ramps and bridges from I-696 to 13 Mile Road.

According to MDOT, starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, crews will close the northbound I-75 exit ramp to 11 Mile Road to begin retaining wall building. During the ramp closure, northbound I-75 traffic will be detoured to 14 Mile Road until mid-November.

In addition, crews will close the Lincoln Avenue overpass above I-75 to relocate a sewer line ahead of the eventual bridge replacement work scheduled this year.

For the weekend, crews will close the eastbound and westbound I-696 ramps to northbound I-75 to complete the demolition of the bridge supports on the previous Dallas Avenue overpass. The ramp closure is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. Saturday and reopen by 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16.

Beware of I-75 lane closures this weekend due to Gordie Howe International Bridge construction

Lanes on northbound and southbound I-75 will be closed this weekend due to Gordie Howe International Bridge construction.

Bridging North America, the company building and maintaining the new international bridge, said the following I-75 closures are necessary for demolition work of the Waterman Street bridge piers, located on the shoulders of I-75.

The closures will be in place starting Jan. 14, 2022, at 7 p.m. until Jan. 17, 2022, 5 a.m.

  • The three left lanes of northbound I-75 will close between Springwells Street and Waterman Street.
  • The three left lanes of southbound I-75 will close between Waterman Street and Junction Street.

There also will be nightly closures in place Jan. 17-19, 2022, from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. as needed. These include:

  • The three left lanes of northbound I-75 between Springwells Street and Waterman Street.
  • The three left lanes of southbound I-75 between Waterman Street and Junction Street.

Costing about $4.5 billion, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will be the largest of its kind in North America when work is finished.

The bridge will connect Detroit to Windsor and is expected to open by 2024. Officials said they are on schedule to complete the bridge.
