Metro Detroit weather: Scattered showers clear up by Thanksgiving

DETROIT – We’ll dry out before sunrise on Thanksgiving. Temperatures rise in the short term, but we’re monitoring a potential winter storm for early next week.

Thanksgiving Forecast

Other than some scattered showers overnight, we’re headed into a dry stretch that will last through the weekend. Thursday starts mild, with lows matching normal highs for the day! Watch out for early (or super late for those who are out and about) fog with all the moisture and mild temps. The daylight hours will feature plenty of clouds with limited sun. Winds will be light and highs will reach the low-to-mid 50s. Black Friday won’t be much different, except we’ll likely ditch the morning fog.

Dry Weekend

If you’re a stickler for waiting until after Thanksgiving to put up your holiday decorations, this will be a fairly nice weekend (by November standards) to do it. We’ll get more sunshine with slightly lower temperatures. Expect highs in the mid 40s. Winds still won’t be an issue. So your inflatable Rudolph is good to go. But you might want to check out Monday through Wednesday, detailed below, before you blow up your reindeer.

Winter Storm Potential

Another southerly system will take shape to our south on Sunday. We’ll finish the weekend dry, but it’s the track of the system for Monday that caught our attention. Despite a much larger than normal spread in the models, one solution (and yes, it’s the European Model) blankets us with multiple inches of snow from a nearly stagnant system over 2–3 days! The American GFS model peels off the low to our south, giving us minimal impact snow showers. These two “heavy hitters” in our long-range model suite often disagree, but the degree of disagreement here is uncharacteristically large. This is all a very wordy way of saying we have extremely low confidence in the forecast early next week, but the impact from one of those scenarios could be significant. We’ll continue to monitor this throughout the holiday weekend.

Have a safe and carb-loaded Thanksgiving!
