The structural issues were found during a routine inspection of the market. City of Ann Arbor officials said the building’s foundations were determined to be compromised and unsafe for long-term use.

The farmers market itself will continue to operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Staff will be using a trailer as a temporary office.

“While the demolition of the market office is unfortunate and unplanned, the community has been presented with a unique opportunity to re-envision the future of the farmers market,” officials wrote on the park planning website.

Park planning officials will perform a study to plan the market’s future. This process will include looking into community opinions, and the wants and needs of vendors, shoppers and other stakeholders.

Designed by architect Kent Hubbell, the Ann Arbor Farmers Market office opened in May 1984 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Every week, the market itself hosts hundreds of community members buying produce, meat, flowers, and bakery items, among others, for sale by more than 120 vendors.
