ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Humane Society of Huron Valley is dropping adoption fees to$50 in July in the hopes of emptying its Ann Arbor shelter.

Dogs and cats six months and older will only cost $50 between July 8-31 thanks to a sponsorship from the Bissell Pet Foundation.

“Emptying the shelter would make such a tremendous impact on the staff, volunteers—and obviously the animals at HSHV especially because we’ve been so full for so long. We’ve been creative with making space for animals, but we can only do so much without adopters,” said HSHV COO Matt Schaecher in a release.

“Our community is incredibly compassionate, and we hope people will come out in full force to adopt this month.”

HSHV is joining 390 animal shelters in 44 states across the United States aiming to find more homes for animals in need during the annual “Empty the Shelters” event.

Animals with golden hearts on their profiles can be adopted for free. Many of them have been at the shelter for a long time.

All adoptable animals are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered as part of the HSHV’s adoption program.

“Shelters are struggling with a variety of challenges right now—some are evacuating pets because of wildfires, tornadoes, or even loss of air conditioning in extreme heat, and others are overcrowded and having to euthanize highly adoptable pets to make space, a tragic situation,” said BISSELL Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell.

“BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Summer National Empty the Shelters event is a crucial opportunity for people to make a real difference in their community through adoption. Every single adoption saves a life and creates space to save another. Please adopt and give a pet a chance it might otherwise not have. If you can’t adopt, fostering saves lives when shelters are full. Deserving pets across the country are counting on all of us.”

HSHV is open between Mon-Weds: 11 am to 6 pm Thurs-Friday: 11 am to 7 pmSat-Sun: 11 am to 5 pm
