The Wolverines outplayed Auburn in the first half but trailed 30-29 as both teams played sloppily.
Turnovers aren’t anything new for Michigan, as that’s how they played this season, but they gave the ball up on eight nonsensical plays.
It’s like just tossing the ball for an ordinary pass was turned over, or an entry pass got ripped away while attacking the rim.
Michigan took a 27-23 lead, which seemed to quiet the rowdy SEC crowd, but they continued to give the ball away.
The only thing keeping them from running away with the score was the turnovers, but the Tigers turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, as they, too, were sloppy.
On a bright side for the Wolverines was the fact that Danny Wolf was aggressive as he finished the half with 11 points which led both teams.
He even went baseline and dunked to get the Maize Rage into the game.
But Johni Broome went score for score with him as he finished with 10 points while picking up two fouls.
Denver Jones scored seven points to help his Tigers keep the game close early, while point guard Tahaad Pettiford added five points in the first half.
Michigan guards Tre Donaldson and Nimari Burnett each scored five points, while Rubin Jones went to the charity stripe for four points.
Vladislav Goldin had some golden opportunities at the rim but he either turned the ball over or missed some contested shots at the rim. He also went to the foul line and missed two free throws to finish the half with two points.
Roddy Gayle Jr., who was the hero in the Round of 32, had two points in the first half as well, while L.J. Cason and Will Tschetter finished with zero.
Both sides are lucky to be in the game at this point, but after the break, they’d probably come out more aggressive in this SEC football style atmosphere as the Auburn fans are chomping at the bit for their chance to erupt.
This game looks to be coming down to coaching by Dusty May and Bruce Pearl.
