You can also bring new shoes to our event on Aug. 20

Shoes for School.

You can help local kids get new athletic shoes with a donation to a Detroit nonprofit.

Local 4 is partnering with Lace Up Detroit as part of our monthly Go 4 It community campaign, with the aim to get kids the shoes they need for the school year.

We’ll be at Durfee Innovation Society (2470 Collingwood Street) in Detroit on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., where you can bring new shoes for kids aged 5 through 13.

Donate $25 for a pair of kids shoes

You can also donate directly to Lace Up Detroit -- every $25 donation is a pair of shoes for a child in the Detroit area.

---> Here’s where to make a donation

(As of Aug. 16, more than $19,000 has already been raised!)

Why shoes are needed

Facts Associated with Wearing old Worn-Out Shoes

  • Unlike clothes that can be handed down, shoe structures wear down and conform to the foot of the child who previously wore the shoes.
  • Old shoes hinder children from fully participating and engaging in childhood experiences at school and at play.
  • 1 in 3 U.S families cannot afford new shoes for all the children in their family. This dynamic was even further aggravated by a 12% increase in shoe prices post pandemic.

The Emotional and Physical Boost Associated with New Properly

Fitting Shoes is Significant:

  • Self Esteem goes up by 89%
  • Confidence by 90%
  • Physical Activity by 72%
  • Social Interaction by 81%

Your generous donation of “new” shoes or monetary donation will help children attend school this year with joy, dignity, and confidence.
