Scammers target Metro Detroit seniors with fake snow plow contracts

TROY, Mich. – Scammers are targeting seniors with fraudulent snow plow contracts, leaving them with uncleared driveways and financial loss.

In Troy, senior Christine Hargrave signed a contract in October with a local snow removal company, paying nearly $200, but the crew has failed to show despite significant snowfall.

“I called many times. I called three or four times since Saturday, Sunday and today and nothing. They don’t even answer the phone,” Hargrave said. “It’s very upsetting I can’t do it myself and I don’t have anybody here to to do that.”

After attempts to contact the company went unanswered, volunteers have stepped in to help.

Michigan Attorney General advises checking reviews, avoiding cash payments, and seeking neighbor recommendations before signing such contracts.

“Check with the Better Business Bureau and see if there have been complaints. Check with our office and see if there have been multiple complaints because if there have been, you definitely don’t want to use that service,” AG Dana Nessel said.
