Shop local and support Detroit businesses

Gift ideas for a variety of ages

As you cross gifts off your holiday list, are you shopping local? Don’t forget that small businesses from Detroit have plenty to offer this holiday season.

When it comes to gift ideas for the kids, The Lab Drawer offers fun and education in boxes. These STEAM-themed immersive kits provide opportunities for kids to do things like creating DNA sequences with candy.

Meanwhile, a bottle of wine could make the perfect gift for the adults.

“There’s always a reason to drink champagne, but during the holidays definitely a go-to,” said Mikiah Westbrooks, the owner of Brix Wine in Detroit.

Westbrooks also suggested a red blend called Chaos Theory. In addition, she mentioned Sancerre, which is a sauvignon blanc.

Shoppers might also keep their eyes out for items from Pingree Detroit, which uses upcycled leather from car manufacturers to create products like bags and wallets. Pingree Detroit also has bow ties for dogs and dog leashes.

“Small businesses are not only the backbone of our communities, but our economy as well,” said Madison Schillig, the program director for Motor City Match. “They are creating a tax-base to support systems like our schools, city services, and things like that. They’re providing services to residents and goods as well. They’re creating jobs. And so, by supporting small businesses, we’re also supporting our local economy.”
