Experience a winter getaway in Michigan

Four places to visit in the Mitten State

Are you ready for a winter adventure? You don’t have to travel far because Michigan is filled with beautiful getaways you can experience even in the cold months of winter.

Jill Halpin, the founder and chief beach officer with My Michigan Beach Travel shared four suggestions for spots to explore in Michigan this winter.

Halpin started with what’s called Harbor Country where you can find Lake Michigan, hiking trails, breweries, Swedish bakeries, antiquing, and more

“There’s eight little towns that are kind of tucked away in the dunes, some are beachfront, some are cozy little towns,” Halpin said while describing Harbor Country in southwestern Michigan.

People often head to Grand Haven in the summer, but Halpin suggests traveling there in the winter as well. She said you can explore the shops and restaurants. However, Halpin said the best thing to do is to head to the pier and check the freighter schedules so that you can see a freight come in to dock.

If you’re looking for a great day trip from Detroit, Halpin encourages you to visit Lexington and Port Sanilac. She called it one of Michigan’s best kept secrets.

“Put on your waterproof boots and head up to Lexington and Port Sanilac. There’s gorgeous, gorgeous beaches there, but there’s a lot of rocky beaches and it’s great for rockhounding,” Halpin said.

Finally, Halpin talked about visiting Harrisville where you see the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse along Lake Huron.
