Help protect your pets from poison

Michigan Humane shares potentially lifesaving information

It’s National Poison Prevention Week, and it’s the perfect time to make sure you’re protecting your pets.

“If you do have a curious pet and they do end up getting into something that is poisonous to them, it can be very dangerous. It could even lead to death,” warned Lidia Vesterfelt with Michigan Humane.

Michigan Humane warns to keep known poisons out of reach, including cleaning chemicals, insecticides, and medications. Pet parents should also wash their hands after using topical medications.

Prevention is key, but it’s also important to know the symptoms of poisoning. They can include difficulty breathing, coughing, diarrhea, depression, shaking, vomiting, and weakness. Other symptoms may be pale gums, seizing, or collapsing.

Michigan Humane also stresses the importance of taking action quickly if you suspect your pet has been poisoned. Michigan Humane said this may require taking your pet to a nearby emergency vet. The Pet Poison Hotline can be reached at (855) 764-7661.
