The City of Farmington Hills is rolling out a full slate of holiday happenings — from a Dec. 2 tree lighting and family-friendly performances to DIY gift workshops and community giving campaigns.
“Santa is coming to town Dec. 2,” said Sam Koeppe, cultural arts coordinator for the city. “He’ll be at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. for the tree lighting ceremony.” Koeppe added that the performing arts lineup includes a musical take on “A Christmas Carol” by the city’s youth theater and Once Upon a December Eve on Dec. 14, featuring the Tillman family. “They performed with us last year, was a huge hit and I cannot recommend it enough,” Koeppe said during an appearance on Live in the D.
For shoppers seeking handmade or personalized gifts, The Hawk Makerspace is hosting hands-on classes in sewing, ceramics and woodwork. “We have so many gifting options that you can actually make if you want to give a little handmade special something,” said Rachel Timlin, the city’s cultural arts supervisor. Offerings range from reusable fabric gift bags and holiday bunting to custom pet portrait workshops. “We’ll teach you how to do it,” Timlin said. Woodshop projects include menorahs and laser‑engraved charcuterie boards, and gift certificates are available for those short on time.
Residents can also pitch in to help others this season. “There are a ton of great ways to give back,” Koeppe said, citing the Police and Fire Department’s Toys for Tots drive, running now through mid-December, and the Special Services Division’s Senior Secret Santa program for adults 50 and older.
Timlin highlighted the Crafted in Kindness initiative, which invites volunteers to sew hats and mittens for people in need. “We have a great Crafted in Kindness project that’s hats and mittens for people who need them,” she said. “You can come to The Hawk Maker Space, learn how to use the sewing machines, learn how to sew a pattern, make hats and mittens, and give them away.” Teen participants are welcome with an adult.
