Wayne County to give away 800 turkeys Saturday in Ecorse

County Executive Warren C. Evans urges families to line up early

Wayne County will host its annual Thanksgiving turkey drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 22 at Ecorse High School, where organizers expect to distribute hundreds of turkeys.

County Executive Warren C. Evans joined “Live in the D” to talk about the significance of the event, saying the giveaway began a decade ago in response to need across the county’s 43 communities and has grown significantly. “This year I think we have about 800 turkeys,” Evans said. “Please come. That’s what it’s for.”

Evans said the day is as meaningful for organizers as it is for recipients. “They run the gamut of emotion - from crying to just being very, very thankful,” he said. “When you’re in government, your job is to provide for people at the end of the day. This is just a very clear and concise way that we provide support.”

He added that much of the money used to buy the turkeys comes from county employees.
