January is Train Your Dog Month, so it could be perfect time to make sure your furry friend can sit, stay, roll over, and beyond.
Lidia Vesterfelt with Michigan Humane shared some tricks to help with training. When it comes to training your dog, Lidia explained that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
“If you put the time and the effort and consistency in, you can definitely train a dog regardless of their age,” she said.
Lidia stressed that Michigan Humane believes in positive reinforcement. You can use high-value treats or words of praise.
Dogs learn at different paces, Lidia explained. She said to have patience.
Suggestions include starting simple by trying to teach a dog basic tricks like “sit,” “speak,” or “shake.”
You can also ask your vet if they have recommendations for a professional dog trainer.
If you’re looking to add a furry friend to your family, Michigan Humane has multiple adoptable pets, including a 7-month-old pit mix named Piper. Our sponsor, the Mike Morse Law Firm, will pay the standard adoption fees for whoever adopts Piper. Watch the video above to meet Piper.
