Forget one-size-fits-all back-to-school shopping. Thayer Gorges, owner of Theory and Thread, styled five completely different first-day looks - because every first day is a different story.
There’s the kindergarten mom in an activewear dress and jean jacket, dressed for a day she “can’t think about herself.” As Gorges put it: “This is the mom who is dropping off her baby at kindergarten for the first time... she’s going to go and have mimosas with the girls afterwards and cry.”
Then there’s the new middle schooler, walking the line between cute and cool. “So, these little skirts with the shorties underneath were all the rage for the 6th graders,” Gorges said, finished off with “her custom Hello Kitty Sambas from Adidas.”
For the new art teacher bracing for middle school judgment, function meets flair: “She’s got her painted jeans... and her Dayglo shirt so that they can find her in the hallway if they can’t find her locker.”
The freshman rushing at Michigan State gets a preppy, practical spin: “They have a whole code, a whole itinerary of what outfits suggestions. So, she’s got her cute little green and white gingham on, and she’s got her flat Tory Burches because they walk all over the place.”
But the real takeaway isn’t about any single outfit. Gorges’ advice applies whether or not you have a first day coming up at all: “Every day is a special occasion. Don’t save your good stuff... when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good.”
