The 4 spots where you’re most likely to crash on I-75 in Michigan

Breaking down I-75 crash data from 2019 through 2023

I-75 is one of Michigan’s major highways, and we’ve identified the spots where crashes are most likely to happen.

The highway leaves Toledo, Ohio, enters Erie, Michigan, and winds over 394 miles through the state before exiting into Canada through Sault Ste. Marie. More than 170,000 vehicles use it per day.

When a crash happens, it can cause lane closures, shutdowns, and in some serious situations -- injuries and deaths. The Local 4 Investigative team broke down data from the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts’ Data Query Tool to determine where along I-75 drivers are most likely to crash.

Our research identified four one-mile-long hotspots along I-75 where crashes happen most often. The data includes crashes reported on the MTCF from 2019 through 2023. In that five-year span, there were 2,457 total crashes reported in those four areas.

In those four spots combined over that five-year timeframe, more than 60% of the crashes occurred in the northbound lanes. The data found that crashes most frequently occurred on a Friday and between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The road conditions didn’t appear to have an impact, with nearly 70% of crashes occurring when the road was dry.

1. I-75 between mile markers 57-58

The mile stretch of I-75 that we identified as having the highest number of crashes between 2019 and through 2023 was between McNichols Road and 7 Mile Road in northern Wayne County.

In that five-year span there were 641 crashes reported on the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts’ Data Query Tool. Two of those crashes were deadly. One person was killed and another was injured in a single-vehicle crash in 2019. One person was killed in a rear-end crash in 2020.

2. I-75 between mile markers 60-61

The mile stretch of I-75 that we identified as having the second-highest number of crashes from 2019 to 2023 was between 9 Mile Road and I-696 in southern Oakland County.

In that five-year span there were 632 crashes reported on the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts’ Data Query Tool. None of those crashes were deadly.

3. I-75 between mile markers 56-57

The mile stretch of I-75 that we identified as having the third-highest number of crashes from 2019 through 2023 was between M-8/Davison Freeway and McNichols Road.

In that five-year span there were 594 crashes reported on the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts’ Data Query Tool. None of those crashes were deadly.

4. I-75 between mile markers 62-63

The mile stretch of I-75 that we identified as having the fourth-highest number of crashes from 2019 through 2023 was between 11 Mile Road and 12 Mile Road in Oakland County.

In that five-year span there were 590 crashes reported on the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts’ Data Query Tool. None of those crashes were deadly.
