DEARBORN, Mich. – A man forgot to grab his pistol, which had been altered to add a grip and work as a machine gun, and magazines of ammunition from a rental car before he returned it in Dearborn, officials said.
Sean Christopher Jenkins, 29, is named in a criminal complaint that was unsealed in January.
Dearborn police said they received a call on Dec. 26, 2023, from Enterprise Rent-A-Car after workers found a handgun in the center console of a blue 2022 Nissan Sentra SV that had just been returned.
Officers went to the rental car lot and identified the gun as a Glock 17 9 mm. It was equipped with a gold barrel, a vertical foregrip, and a machine gun conversion device, cops said.
They also found two extended magazines and a standard magazine, and all three were loaded.
Enterprise workers told police the Nissan had been rented by Jenkins on Dec. 23, 2023, and returned three days later. He paid for the rental with his credit card, they said.
About 20 minutes after police left Enterprise, Jenkins returned and said he had left something in the car. Workers told Jenkins that the gun was with police, and he said, “I don’t have paperwork for it,” the criminal complaint reads.
Security footage shows Jenkins renting the Nissan on Dec. 23, 2023 (left image below) and returning it on Dec. 26, 2023 (right).
Police believe Jenkins was the last person to use the car.
Records show Jenkins completed an ATF form on Dec. 6, 2021, for the gun, which indicates he is the original buyer. But there are no guns registered to Jenkins in Michigan, according to police.
Officials said the gun was modified with a “Glock Switch” to make it shoot automatically and function as a machine gun.
A vertical foregrip was also attached to the front. To legally add that grip to a handgun, Jenkins would have had to fill out ATF paperwork, and there is no record that he did so, the criminal complaint says.
ATF officials said Jenkins had no license to possess such a gun. The criminal complaint concludes there’s probable cause that he knowingly possessed a pistol that had been converted into a machine gun.
