“The universal kayak-canoe launch not only gives area residents access to the Clinton River but also provides extra parking for an extremely popular park in the Township,” said Public Services Director Mary Bednar. “The parking lot design incorporates sustainable design techniques, which allow more residents to enjoy George George Park while still preserving the natural environment.”

The project is part of the township’s strategic vision plan to implement a river-trail system for the Clinton River and increase recreation in the community.

Some other features of the project include:

  • An environmentally friendly parking lot with trailer parking spots
  • A riverside family picnic rest area
  • A kayak drop-off and pick-up rack
  • Clinton River display map and informational signage

The total cost of the project was about $1.3 million. Some of this funding came from the George Family, who donated land for the park 16 years ago.

“The George family is still involved and has continued to partner with the Township to help us add amenities and make improvements to the park, including the universal launch and parking area,” said Bednar.

Other funding came from grants from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Macomb County Economic Development and Planning Department, and the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation.

“The Clinton River is an integral part of who we are and what we value in Clinton Township,” said Parks & Recreation Director Brian Kay. “After we addressed debris removal, clean-up, and daylighting, we are now set to embark on a new era of environmental appreciation and outdoor recreation in our community.”

The park is located on Moravian Drive, in Clinton Township and borders the Clinton River.
