Teen accused of dragging police officer with car in Detroit turns self in

DETROIT – The teen accused of driving away from a traffic stop while dragging a police officer with his car has turned himself in, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded on Dec. 10 just before midnight on Saint Marys Street near 7 Mile and Greenfield.

According to Detroit police, officers on routine patrol went to check on a car blocking a sidewalk.

As officers approached, they noticed two occupants in the car. They asked them to leave the car. The people in the car did not follow instructions, according to police. One of the officers then tried to open the car door.

The car pulled into the police car, and the officer was then dragged by the vehicle.

The Detroit Police Department said the officers feared for their safety and fired several shots at the car.

The car got away but was found nearby on Prevost Street. The officer was taken to a hospital and has since been released.

After that, police found an 18-year-old a couple of blocks away. They learned this person was shot multiple times in the chest and arm. Police believe they were one of the occupants of the vehicle that dragged the officer. This person is currently in the hospital in critical condition.

Police were searching for the driver of the car, who later turned himself in. He was questioned by investigators and released pending further investigation.
