Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash

DETROIT – A woman was killed and six other people were injured in a wrong-way crash on I-96.

The crash happened around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025, in the westbound lanes of I-96 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Detroit.

Michigan State Police said they received reports of a driver of a sedan traveling east in the west lanes of I-96. As troopers were dispatched to the area, a call came in reporting a head-on crash near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Police said a sedan and a dark-colored SUV were at the scene of the crash both with heavy front-end damage.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Six people were transported to two area hospitals to be treated. They are expected to all be released from the hospital on Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing.
