A Livingston County man has been charged for allegedly embezzling money from a vulnerable adult to benefit himself and his nonprofit organization, officials said.
Kirk Lanam, 52, of Hartland, was arraigned on four counts of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult, $100,000 or more, which is a 20-year felony. He was also charged with one count of fraudulently obtaining a signature, a 10-year felony.
According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s Office, Lanam allegedly fraudulently obtained legal power of attorney for an 87-year-old man, knowing that he was a vulnerable adult with a court-appointed guardian.
While in this position, Lanam allegedly embezzled more than $400,000 from the man, to use for his benefit, and the benefit of his purported nonprofit, Veteran’s Service Dog Organization, in Howell.
A pre-examination conference is scheduled for Feb. 3, and his preliminary examination is set for Feb. 10.
