CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich. – A Wayne County woman was charged in connection to smuggling drugs and SIM cards into a Northern Michigan prison, police said.
Frances Ramirez-Huerta, 41, of Redford, allegedly brought the contraband into the Chippewa Correctional Facility in Kincheloe, Michigan.
On Jan. 11, Michigan Department of Corrections workers were suspicious after they noticed a prisoner acting unusual during a visitation with Ramirez-Huerta, according to police.
Surveillance footage allegedly showed that Ramirez-Huerta had put items into the waistband of her pants, and secretly gave them to the prisoner while they were in the visitation room.
When MDOC officers searched the prisoner, they found a bundle that included 140 suboxone strips, and another bundle that had seven grams of marijuana flower and two SIM cards for cellphones.
Ramirez-Huerta was arrested and arraigned on the following charges:
- Controlled substance-creation/delivery of an analogue
- Controlled substance-delivery/manufacture of marijuana
- Controlled substance-maintaining a drug house
- Furnishing contraband to a prisoner in prison
- Furnishing a cell phone to a prisoner
She was lodged at the Chippewa County Jail and given a $1,000 bond with conditions. Her next court date is set for Jan. 27, 2025.
