ST CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – A 60-year-old man is facing felony charges after reportedly stealing a bag and carjacking a vehicle in St. Clair Shores.

It happened at about 10:30 a.m., Feb. 21, outside a Kroger store. Authorities said Eddie Leon Gaines attempted to grab a 64-year-old woman’s purse when a Good Samaritan intervened by hitting him with her shopping bag. Gaines then reportedly entered the driver’s seat of a running vehicle that had a 51-year-old man in the passenger seat and drove off.
Police said Gaines demanded the man’s money and threatened to shoot him and the two got into a fight. The victim was able to get the keys out of the ignition and reportedly stabbed Gaines with a fork before he ran off.
Police found Gaines inside a Walgreens next to where the car stopped.
Gaines was charged with carjacking, unlawful imprisonment and unarmed robbery. His bond was set at $250,000. If he makes bond, Gaines is required to wear a GPS tether and have no contact with any victims, witnesses or the Kroger store.
