Man accused of pointing gun at victim during argument over parking space in Detroit

DETROIT – A man was arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at a victim during an argument over a parking spot.

On March 8, 2025, just before 1:30 a.m., Detroit police responded to the northwest area of the city for a report of an assault with a handgun.

Officers later learned that Lawrence Saffold Jr. allegedly aimed a gun with a blue laser at a victim during an argument over a parking space.

The victim directed officers to the car that Saffold was sitting in. When the officers asked Saffold to leave his car so they can investigate the crime, he reportedly refused multiple times.

Officers tried to physically remove Saffold from the car, leading to Saffold attempting to reach for the car’s gear shifter, allegedly grab an officer’s hair and push the officers away. At one point, police said Saffold jerked his body toward an officer’s face, causing a lens to pop out of the officer’s glasses.

Saffold was arrested and taken to the Detroit Detention Center for processing.

After his arrest, his car was impounded When officers searched inside, they found a loaded Glock 22 .40 caliber pistol was an extended magazine with a blue laser light attachment inside the car’s center console.

Saffold faces a Felon in Possession of a Firearm charge.

Previous conviction

Police learned Saffold was convicted for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was sentenced to 95 months in prison with 36 months of supervised release on March 3, 2016. Authorities said he is on supervised release until Sept. 11, 2025.

Saffold is also under indictment in the Metro Detroit due to a separate violation of a weapons charge around April 24, 2024, which authorities said is also the subject of a pending supervised release violation hearing.
