Police say shooting appeared to be isolated incident

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – One person has been shot at a hospital in Oakland County Thursday morning, and a suspect is in custody, according to police.

Troy police said on March 20 that a shooting happened at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital on Dequindre Road.

Here’s what we know so far about the active shooter situation:

The shooting happened just after 7 a.m. Thursday in the hospital’s parking garage.

Troy police said a handgun was fired five times by the suspect. The victim, a 25-year-old man from Troy, was struck twice.

Police said the shooting happened between two hospital employees.

The victim is currently in the emergency room being treated for his injuries. He is expected to be okay. Police said the victim was able to tell police who shot him.

The suspect left the area, and police eventually found him at a house in Macomb Township on Breezeway Drive. He has been arrested.

Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital was on lockdown Thursday morning. Sources told Local 4 that staff received the following message:

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY -- There is an ACTIVE SHOOTER Troy Hospital in the Parking Structure building. Police are enroute. Please take immediate personal safety measure and follow the run, hide, fight guidelines. For those not currently at the facility, stay away. Do not return to the facility until the all clear has been signaled.

Corewell Health provided the following statement regarding the shooting:

“We are working with local law enforcement. Out of an abundance of caution, the hospital is on lockdown. One victim is in the emergency department for medical treatment. Patients with services scheduled should not come to the hospital at this time. Patients may call the department where they were scheduled for service directly. No other information is available at this time.”

Agents from the Detroit Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene to assist responding agencies.

Barbara, a medical assistant who works at the hospital, told Local 4 what she witnessed when she got there.

“I was getting into the parking lot getting ready to walk in and another coworker was screaming to get in my car there was an active shooter,” said Barbara. “I saw police officers on the parking garage with their guns drawn walking in a line. I was getting ready to walk in to punch in for the day.”

“It’s scary. You go to your workplace thinking you’re going to be safe,” she continued.

“I’m worried about my coworkers and patients,” she said.

Workers at the hospital were evacuated from the building via school buses from Rochester Hills.

Troy School District sent the following message to parents and staff following the reported shooting:

Good morning OneTroy,

As you may know, Corewell Health/Beaumont in Troy is experiencing an emergency. We want to assure you that our schools remain safe and secure. We have taken additional security measures, and our team is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local authorities.

Schools remain in session, and our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We will continue to keep you informed as needed.

A commander from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office released details on the arrest of the suspect. You can watch the interview below:

People have been seen in handcuffs outside of the Macomb Township house Thursday morning.

The hospital has since had its lockdown lifted. Corewell Health provided a statement following the shooting:

“The situation at Troy Hospital has been cleared, and we are resuming normal operations. Patients who had appointments that were canceled earlier today or have appointments later today may call the department where they were scheduled directly to be rescheduled or confirm their appointment. We are incredibly thankful for the quick actions of all our team members and law enforcement.”

At 1 p.m. on Thursday, Troy police held a press conference to provide an update on the investigation. That can be viewed below:

Troy police said the victim and the suspect were friends at one point and “recently had a falling out.”

Police said an arraignment is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours. Once he is arraigned, more information on the suspect will be released.

Police also said the video of the shooting was not captured but confirmed multiple shots were fired towards the victim. A few people witnessed the shooting, and the victim went into the emergency room to get help.
