Caleb Punches, 27, appeared to have kicked one window and smashed another window with an unknown tool on Feb. 3, 2025.
The cost of replacing the windows has been estimated at $35,000. According to the university, they were historic stained glass windows that were installed when the home was originally built in 1929.
With the help of donations and a recently approved grant, the windows are expected to be replaced later this year.
Punches was arrested as a result of an anonymous tip and was arraigned on Monday, April 1.
“This act of vandalism has been a very upsetting situation for all of us,” added Bill Matt, the executive director of Meadow Brook Hall. “We are greatly appreciative of the Oakland University Police Department for their excellent work in apprehending the responsible party.”
According to the Oakland University Police Chief, Punches was not a student or had any affiliation with the university. It’s believed the crime was completely random.
Punches was charged with malicious destruction of a building and breaking and entering. His bond was posted at $10,000, and he is expected to appear in court on April 8, 2025.
