Is Mackinac Island the best travel destination in the summer?

Vote until May 12 for USA Today’s 10Best

Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. – If you’re planning road trips with the family this summer, you should add this Northern Michigan spot to the list. Mackinac Island is in the running to become USA Today’s best summer travel spot.

Mackinac Island is gearing up to welcome back visitors on May 2. After the ice storms that spread through 12 counties up north, including Mackinac, crews have been working to get everything cleaned up before the season begins. Steph Castelein, managing director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau was on the morning show and said the electricity is on and the paved trails are cleared.

If you’re planning a trip to the island this summer, whether it’s a day trip or you’re staying overnight, Castelein said, “go early and stay as long as you can. There’s nothing that beats an overnight trip. If you can only do a day trip spend as much time as you can because the best way to explore Mackinac is slow, it’s a slower pace of life.”

Mackinac Island is where you’ll ride on horse-drawn carriages along car-free roads, watch fudge being made and then sample it, and tour the historic Fort Mackinac.

It needs help in becoming USA Today’s best travel destinations. Currently, it ranks 3rd of 20 listed destinations. You can vote once per day until voting ends on May 12. The 10 winners will be announced on May 21.
