Michigan National Guard soldiers deploying to Southwest Border

Unit supports U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 6th deployment since 2020

120 Soldiers from the Michigan Army National Guard’s 1430th Engineer Company, based in Traverse City, deployed to the Southwest Border to support federal law enforcement efforts.

The Soldiers will depart from Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2025.

Their mission is to provide support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s border security operations.

This marks the sixth deployment of the Michigan National Guard to the Southwest Border since 2020.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer approved previous deployments in 2021, 2022, and 2024 under President Joe Biden, and in 2020 under President Donald Trump.

The 1430th Engineer Company last deployed overseas in 2010, serving in Afghanistan.

The current deployment is expected to last up to a year.
