Republican lawmakers call for governor to fire Michigan State Police leaders

Michigan governor’s office has ‘full confidence’ in James Grady

The Michigan governor’s office is standing by Michigan State Police leadership despite calls from Republican lawmakers for them to resign or be fired.

Thursday morning Senate Republicans held a press conference demanding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer “clean house” and request Colonel James Grady and Deputy Director Lt. Col Aimee Brimacombe resign -- or be fired.

This call for action comes a week after a federal lawsuit was filed by former Michigan State Police officer Sarah Krebs. In the lawsuit are allegations of systemic racism, sexism, and harassment.

“She stood up to the toxic culture and they punished her for it. Her duties were stripped, humiliating her, and trying to silence her,” Sen. Jim Runestad said.

Ten Senate Republicans signed the letter to Whitmer, stating, “the failed leadership of these two individuals continues to erode public trust in what should be one of our state’s most respected institutions.”

Republicans also highlighted an internal poll released over the summer that found 98% of troopers lacked confidence in the department’s leadership.

The governor’s office released a statement supporting Grady’s leadership. Stating, “Michigan has seen significant drops in violent crime.”

“Colonel Grady has demonstrated steady, principled leadership at the helm of the Michigan State Police, dedicating more than 25 years to serving and protecting the people of Michigan. Thanks to the efforts of Colonel Grady, troopers across the state, and their close collaboration with local law enforcement, Michigan has seen significant drops in violent crime. While some choose to focus on partisan attacks, we remain focused on ensuring every Michigander feels safe in their community. We have full confidence in Colonel Grady to get the job done.”
