Man caught asleep behind wheel in Livingston County pushes police cruiser into I-96

‘Put the car in park, Eric,’ deputies repeatedly shouted

BRIGHTON, Mich. – A 44-year-old man was arrested after allegedly waking from sleep behind the wheel and pushing a police cruiser into traffic during a tense standoff with deputies.

According to authorities, a Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a vehicle stopped on I-96 near Spencer Road in Brighton at just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. The driver was found passed out with his foot on the brake and the car still in drive.

Dashcam video shows multiple emergency vehicles surrounding the car while the man remained asleep, seemingly unaware of the situation. First responders knocked on the windows for about two minutes trying to wake him.

After waking the man, he reportedly refused to put the car in park and instead accelerated, pushing a patrol vehicle that was placed in front of the car into traffic.

Once stopped, the man allegedly continued to argue with deputies and officers with the Brighton Police Department for several minutes until they smashed a window and physically removed him from his car and arrested him.

Dashcam footage can be watched in the video player above.

Eric Stein was charged Sunday, Nov. 23, with operating while intoxicated, malicious destruction of police property, resisting and obstructing police and fleeing and eluding. His bond was set at $50,000.

He remains lodged at the Livingston County Jail in Howell.
