Police seek gunman after shooting near Partridge Creek injures teen

Victim expected to survive

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 17-year-old from Mount Clemens is expected to survive after a shooting at The Mall at Partridge Creek.

It happened near the MJR theater just after 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, just as many families were attending the mall’s tree lighting event and moviegoers were inside the theater.

Gunfire erupted, causing panic as people ran to their vehicles in the parking lot, while others stayed inside the mall for safety.

Authorities said the shooting likely began as a verbal argument between two people that escalated. Police emphasized there is no threat to the public.

Police are still looking for the suspected gunman.

The area already had a large police presence for Sunday’s tree lighting ceremony.

First responders found the 17-year-old at the scene with a gunshot wound. They were taken to a hospital for treatment and are expected to survive.

The Clinton Township Police Department said the shooting happened just outside the entrance of the MJR Partridge Creek Cinema and any reports of shootings taking place inside the mall are inaccurate.

Police are looking for a person of interest described as a man wearing a green hooded sweatshirt with white flowers and jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Clinton Township Police Department at 586-493-7839.

Mall safety

With the holiday shopping season underway, retired Detroit police assistant chief Steve Dolunt reminds everyone to stay alert.

“If you are in a mall, like an active shooter at a school, it’s run, hide, fight. You run to the nearest store. Too many people try to run out of the mall, which so is the shooter,” Dolunt said.

Once in the store, he said to lock the door and hide in the back. Once safe, call 911.

“Be vigilant. If you see something, say something. Don’t be a hero. Let the guys that get paid be a hero,” Dolunt said.

A representative from The Mall at Partridge Creek released the following statement:

“We are currently working with local law enforcement to gather details on what occurred during tonight’s tree lighting event. Guest and staff safety is our top priority, and we will continue to collaborate with Clinton Township Police Department as they investigate this situation.”
