Consumer Reports reveals best storage options for Thanksgiving leftovers

How to keep your Thanksgiving leftovers fresh

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year, you already know how pricey the grocery bill is.

So, once the feast is over, you’ll want to make sure those leftovers stay fresh until every last crumb is gobbled up.

Consumer Reports tested food storage options to help you make the most of every bite.

“To preserve the freshness and quality of foods, you really want to keep things airtight,” says Paul Hope of Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports’ testing revealed that vacuum sealers provide the most airtight food storage solution.

Their evaluations identified a FoodSaver model as a quick and easy-to-use option for optimal storage.

For those who prefer vacuum containers, the Zwilling starter set earned Consumer Reports’ top pick, demonstrating impressive performance by keeping food fresh for up to 10 days in refrigeration.

IKEA’s stainless steel containers ranked highest in Consumer Reports’ ratings for traditional storage options. These containers stood out for their durability and excellent food preservation capabilities, while offering a plastic-free alternative.

For those dealing with limited refrigerator or freezer space, Glad storage bags proved to be a strong, stretchy, and leak-resistant option.

Alternatively, W&P Porter’s silicone bags offer a reusable option that’s soft, pliable, and easy to clean.

For those exhausted from cooking and seeking quick storage solutions, Consumer Reports also evaluated foil and plastic wrap options.

Reynolds’ Pitmaster’s Choice emerged as the strongest foil in testing.

“It did so well in our puncture tests and because it’s really strong, you can reuse it and save money,” said Lisa Fogarty of Consumer Reports.

For those who find Pitmaster’s Choice too thick, Amazon Basics foil serves as a reliable alternative.

In the plastic wrap category, Stretch-Tite’s BPA-free product excelled, offering strength, good adhesion, and clean tearing thanks to its built-in cutter.

These storage solutions can help preserve Thanksgiving leftovers effectively, allowing hosts to focus on post-feast relaxation and football viewing instead of food storage concerns.
