Hamtramck mayoral recount expands Alharbi’s lead, 37 ballots remain disputed

Despite the ongoing legal uncertainty, Alharbi remains focused on his transition to office

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Adam Alharbi has once again emerged victorious in Hamtramck’s mayoral race following a recount of nearly 5,000 ballots, though the possibility of a legal challenge still looms.

The recount, completed Tuesday, Dec. 2, expanded Alharbi’s winning margin from six to 11 votes over challenger Muhith Mahmood, a current city councilman.

However, controversy continues to surround 37 uncounted ballots discovered in the clerk’s office after the election.

Mahmood, who requested the recount, has already filed a lawsuit seeking to have these additional ballots counted. The Wayne County Board of Canvassers had previously denied including these ballots in the total.

Despite the ongoing legal uncertainty, Alharbi remains focused on his transition to office.

“Of course, I’m ready. I’m excited and the future of Hamtramck has been something I’ve been looking forward to improving, to make sure Hamtramck is moving forward and that our city is thriving and our residents’ concerns are resolved,” Alharbi said.

What’s at Stake

The disputed 37 ballots could potentially affect the outcome of this closely contested race, depending on a judge’s future ruling. However, as it stands, Alharbi is scheduled to take office as Hamtramck’s new mayor on January 1.
