The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recalling shredded cheese sold in 31 states and Puerto Rico because it may contain metal fragments.
The cheese produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. was initially recalled on Oct. 3, 2025, due to some packaging containing possible metal fragments.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the FDA upgraded the risk level to Class II, which means there’s a “remote” chance of serious health risks, but there is a possibility of temporary or reversible effects.

Where the recalled cheese was sold
The recalled cheese was sold in 31 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. It was also sold in Puerto Rico.
The recalled shredded cheese has been sold at major retailers, including Target, Walmart and Aldi.
What to do with recalled cheese
There are no specific instructions from the FDA for this recall. But, the safest thing to do for a Class II recall is to avoid eating the recalled cheese and toss or return it instead.
