Protecting your packages from porch pirates

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Amazon this holiday season to help residents protect their packages from theft.

This effort is part of a nationwide campaign led by the National Sheriff’s Association to raise awareness about proactive steps customers can take to prevent porch piracy.

“Package theft not only affects our residents during what should be a joyful time, but it also strains our limited law enforcement resources,” said Sheriff Troy Goodnough. “When community members take simple precautions to protect their deliveries, they help us focus our deputies’ time on more serious emergencies.”

To keep packages safe, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Amazon recommend these strategies:

1. Track your package in real time using Amazon’s Map Tracking feature on Amazon or through the Amazon app to know exactly when deliveries arrive.

2. Specify a hidden drop-off location to keep packages out of view by providing delivery instructions through the Amazon app or website.

3. More than 25,000 package pickup locations are available to customers, allowing them to conveniently choose how and where their items arrive-whether at home, work, Amazon or a partner location.

4. Amazon Share Tracking allows you to share tracking details with friends and family so they can pick up your package for you if you’re not home.

5. Checking delivery confirmation photos provided by Amazon to verify where packages were placed.

6. Same-Day Delivery customers can choose the delivery window that works best for them in select areas where the option is available.

If you do experience package theft, the Sheriff’s office recommends you do the following:

1. Report the theft to Monroe County Central Dispatch at 734-243-7070

2. Contact Amazon’s Customer Service through the app or website for 24/7 support.

3. Check with neighbors to see if they received your package or witnessed anything suspicious.
