Cubs remain in den while they grow, visible to guests in coming months

Detroit Zoo welcomes 3 lion cubs (WDIV)

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Detroit Zoo is celebrating more than just the holidays -- Amirah, a 9-year-old African lioness, has given birth to three healthy cubs.

Sadly, a fourth cub born later did not survive.

Despite this loss, the zoo is grateful that Amirah and her three cubs are healthy and doing well.

As a first-time mother, the zoo says Amirah has been calm, attentive, and nurturing -- spending her days bonding closely with her cubs.

According to the zoo, African lions face threats from habitat loss, declining prey, disease, and human-wildlife conflict, making them vulnerable to extinction and endangered in some regions.

The arrival of these cubs is a significant milestone in the Detroit Zoo’s ongoing commitment to conserving this iconic species.

For now, Amirah and her cubs will remain hidden from public view as they grow and thrive in their den.

Visitors can expect to see the cubs in a few months once they become more mobile and ready to explore larger spaces.
